In 1908, Jack Johnson became the first African American to win the world heavyweight boxing title. Jack Johnson was nicknamed the "Galveston Giant," and his reign was from 1908- 1915. Johnson knocked out Canadian Tommy Burns in the 14th round in a championship fight near Sydney, Australia.
